Obama meets tech giants to discuss concerns over NSA surveillance

On Friday executives of several large US internet companies, including Facebook Inc and Google, met President of United States Barack Obama on Friday to discuss their concerns over government surveillance programs.

Obama and senior aides met six tech executives to discuss issues surrounding intelligence, technology and privacy, the White House said in a statement following the meeting.

Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google, the world's largest Internet search engine; Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer of Facebook, the world's biggest social network; and Reed Hastings, chief executive officer of Netflix Inc, an online video streaming service, were among those attending the meeting, the White House said. Other attendees are Aaron Levie and Drew Houston, chief executive officers of two online storage and file-sharing companies Box and Dropbox; and Alex Karp, chief executive officer of Palantir Technologies, a data-mining company which is partly backed by the CIA and whose clients include the National Security Agency.

The president sought to provide reassurances that the administration is putting in place reforms to intelligence collection after revelations of widespread collection of data stirred outrage.
"The president reiterated his administration's commitment to taking steps that can give people greater confidence that their rights are being protected while preserving important tools that keep us safe," the White House said.
But Facebook's Zuckerberg, a public critic of government data gathering practices, said that more needed to be done. An industry source said invitations to Friday's meeting with Obama were received on 15 March, two days after Zuckerberg blasted US electronic surveillance practices in a widely read public post on Facebook.

"I've called President Obama to express my frustration over the damage the government is creating for all of our future. Unfortunately, it seems like it will take a very long time for true full reform," Zuckerberg wrote.
Some of the largest US technology companies, including Google, its rival Yahoo Inc, social networking site Twitter Inc and others, have been pushing for more transparency, oversight and restrictions to US government's gathering of intelligence.
Executives from several other companies, including Yahoo and LinkedIn Corp, were said to be unable to attend Friday's meeting because of scheduling conflicts.

WeChat is narrowing the gap between Whatsapp as it passes 355 million monthly active users

With 450 million active users each month and 1 million new sign-ups per day, WhatsApp is indeed the world’s most popular messaging app.

However, figures revealed today show that WeChat is catching up. WeChat’s parent company, Tencent, released its earnings report today revealing that the combined monthly active users of WeChat and Weixin (the version available in China) reached 355 million as of end 2013, an increase of 121 percent year-on-year and up six percent quarter-on-quarter.
No doubt WeChat dominates in China, and as Tencent didn’t release a breakdown of the monthly active users according to region, there’s no certainty how it performed in markets beyond its home ground. However, WeChat has been intensifying its efforts to attract overseas users.
WeChat rolled out its games across the world in January this year, after it introduced games and added support for payments toWeixin in August last year. “We will also leverage Official Accounts and Weixin Payment to explore O2O (online-to-offline) and mobile e-commerce opportunities in China,” a Tencent statement says.
This year, Tencent also plans to ramp up its online video service — which could see videos and related content being introduced into WeChat. It also intends to focus on marketing WeChat in certain international markets, and encourage the uptake of its payment solutions in China, which includes rolling out subsidies to consumers and merchants.

Moto X will be launching in India From Wednesday March-19th

Earlier today Indian online retailer Flipkart posted an ad for the Moto X, announcing that it would be available starting tomorrow, March 19th. The price starts at 23,999 rupees for the 16GB in five colors, according to this Flipkart tweet. That's at least in the same ballpark as the US version - it's just north of $390 USD.

Flipkart went on to say that teak and walnut wood backs will be available for 25,999 rupees with delivery in April, again in 16GB - there's no 32GB model planned India for the time being.

There will also be no dual-SIM version, which is a bit of a blow, since dual-SIM phones are popular in many Indian markets. At the moment it looks like Flipkart will be the exclusive merchant for the Moto X, as with the budget-focused Moto G back in February. There will be no Moto Maker-style customization, just the seven color and wood variants.
The retailer is offering a few deals with the launch of Motorola's flagship. Customers can take 70% off a case for their new phone with the same order, or take a 1000 rupee deduction with an EMI financing plan. Flipkart says that ten random customers will get their Moto X for free after a 100% discount.
