Samsung's new 1TB SSD is based on latest 3D technology

Samsung has raised the stakes in flash storage with a new 1TB solid-state drive based on its newest memory technology.

The SSD is targeted at high-end PCs, and the drive is based on Samsung's second generation V-NAND technology, in which storage chips are stacked vertically. Samsung also announced 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacity SSDs.

"Following the last year's introduction of 3-bit NAND-based SSDs for PC markets, our new 3-bit SSD for data centers will help considerably in expanding the market base for SSD," said Young-Hyun Jun, Samsung executive vice president for memory sales and marketing. "We expect SSD market growth will gain momentum as this new SSD delivers significant improvements in data center investment efficiency, leading to full-fledged commercialization of SSDs in IT systems later this year."

Samsung says the new V-NAND storage drives are two times as durable as planar MLC-based NAND drives in writing data and consume 20% less power.

Prices for the SSDs were not immediately available.

“I’ve always known in my heart that Beats belonged with Apple,” Jimmy Iovine, co-founder of Beats, said in a press release obtained by MTV News. “The idea when we started the company was inspired by Apple’s unmatched ability to marry culture and technology. Apple’s deep commitment to music fans, artists, songwriters and the music industry is something special.”

Beats initially built up its brand and name through headphones — from in-ear options to powerful studio-ready versions. After that, other products, including speakers, hit the market. Then, earlier this year, the company launched a music streaming service, which allows users to access an immense library of music once they’ve signed up.

Project Ara smart phones to be powered by Toshiba processors.

Google's Project Ara smartphone which is expected to be unveiled in 2015, will let users build their own smartphones and customize them. Now according to Nikkei, Toshiba is preparing three types of processors for the device, which will be used in the modules as well as within the smartphone.

According to Android Authority, the main processor in Toshiba’s product line would be the company’s TX series of microcontrollers, that are based on ARM’s low-power Cortex M3 and M0 designs. Currently, Toshiba doesn’t have a chip that offers the type of performance that comes from a Cortex-A powered Qualcomm or Samsung chips and will provide essential processing components on the basic device, instead of the main CPU.

Toshiba may also offer a range of integrated circuits, DSP, smaller 8-bit microcontrollers, as well as its own CMOS image sensors, that could be used in various modules of Project Ara.

It seems that, Toshiba began working with Google on Project Ara in October 2013, and “was approved as a preferred supplier for this line, the only Japanese company to be given that status.” Nikkei states that the company will become the “sole chipmaker for the phone about a year after its rollout.”
